Bigger! More! All Natural!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I have had it with reading about art and not actually making art. Last weekend I threw down my books and picked up my needles and sat on my front sidewalk and stitched. It feels so good.

Handsome husband says he hears people emphatically shouting “More” “Bigger” and “All natural” as they walk by.

danielle caught a bird

This is Danielle, my four year old niece, holding the pigeon she chased after and successfully caught in Bryant Park in NYC this week. She refused to let the pigeon go, claiming she won it, she was the fastest, it was too slow and as she had been chasing birds for years this one was her prize to keep. Any attempts to ply her with ice cream and carousel rides, or to appeal to her sense of humanity wouldn’t get her to release the struggling bird from her tiny glorious fist. Threat of bird poop, however, was enough to get her to unhand her victory.

Designed Conversation

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Designed Conversation is a class project I have been involved with for the past two months. We have been working with a group of homeless men from Union Mission in Savannah to come up with some bedding designs to make their lives a little bit better. The culmination of our efforts was shown last week at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. This gave us exposure to some heavy hitters in the design world, especially as we are mostly a bunch of fiber artists, and not furniture makers. We really wowed them and  won the award for Best Design School and and the Metropolis Magazine Editors Pick. Please check out our Designed Conversation website for more info and pictures.

…and the living is easy…

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I am sitting in an airport on my way home after a very long, sad, unexpected weekend in Brighton, England. Summer is just popping her head out on those sunny northern shores and the locals are wasting no time basking in her glow.

Why This Junk Mail Sucks…

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I didn’t ask this major retailer to fill my mailbox–or the floor of my front hall–with printed pleas to spend money at their establishment, they do it of their own volition. After they  foisted these unwanted pieces of paper on me, they leave the burden of its disposal upon me–and point out that I should recycle it!

Always Free Gravy redux

It feels like I’ve been working on this forever, and I almost have been. I started it sometime last summer but didn’t touch it for about 6 months. The letters are filled in with teeny tiny french knots. I have a few long  plane flights ahead of me, so I am hoping to get a few more letters filled in by the end of the month.

I based this logo on the hot dog truck we saw in Toronto last summer.

Aloe Flower

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Have you ever seen an aloe plant flower? We stumbled upon this plant, which had been mostly dead all day, in an alley. We planted it on the side of the house and have watched it grow like mad. This is the third and largest stalk it has shot up, at least a meter.

Notice the jasmine growing up the side of the house. May is jasmine season and the whole of Savannah is fragrant with the blossoms. I wish it would last.
