Aprons

This is some work from early spring 2007. Looking at my identity through tribal lines, it became clear that when the Tribes of Rubi converge, it would be a happy occasion, one to be marked by celebration. My role in this would be cooking, so I created a series of aprons to address several different tribes.

“Savannah recycles.” Rice bags, fruit stickers, produce bags, cotton pajamas. (Thanks Pamela and many others for the help in collecting fruit stickers)

“Legion of the Dingbats” Cotton, tulle, marker. You can watch me making this on an upcoming show (fall 2008) on a home and garden cable channel (you should see the bit where I get the sewing machine needle stuck on my finger.)

“Hoochie Woman” Cotton and dupioni silk with hand and machine embroidery. I really love making french knots. Thanks Pippa Liebert for giving me the awesome Lady of Guadeloupe fabric (by Alexander Henry) in 2001.

“Nonny & Bojangles.” The main part of this is a quilt top my grandmother pieced together in the mid 1950’s. I silkscreened some old letters from her onto fabric for the pockets.
