Eggs for Dinner: Strata
Yes, Patti, you can have eggs for dinner–and I do pretty regularly. Thank you for prompting me to create a new blog category: Eggs for Dinner.
Egg Strata
This fits a 9×13 pan, but can be very easily halved. It also reheats and freezes very well.
Spray 9×13 casserole pan. Cover the bottom with
- 10 slices of sandwich bread (or the equal to)
- 1 pound of grated cheese
Combine in a blender
- 6 large eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 cups milk
- 2 tsp dry mustard powder
Pour mixture over bread and cheese.
Cover & refrigerate for 8 hours.
Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
Feel free to add sauteed or roasted veggies, and choose your cheese to create a combination. Do not use uncooked veg, as they give off too much water. You can switch up your bread, as well, I use whatever is a few days old.
Examples:
- Sauteed mushrooms, red onion and thyme, with a splash of white wine and Gruyere cheese.
- Sauteed spinach and garlic with drained roasted tomatoes and a blend of feta and mild cheddar.
- Roasted red pepper, corn and onions with cheddar cheese.
I suppose you could also add meat, if you would eat that sort of thing.
What Libby Found
My beautiful neighbor Libby went to visit her people in the U.P. (Upper Peninsula [of Michigan]) for the holidays. She found this box of fun at her local goodwill and shelled out $5 so that she might give all of this bliss to me.
(The materials that don’t need I will send to Loop It Up, a great program exposing Savannah’s inner-city kids to the joy of creative play fiber styley.)
The older woman in line behind Libby was so pleased to see the younger generations embarking upon needlework, she grabbed and held Libby’s hand.

A few important items of note:
- The pink tag that says “Embroidery Supplies” is the reverse side of a time card from L.D. Schreiber Cheese Co.
- The floss ranges in price from 5 cents for 9 yards to 27 cents for 8 yards.
- Two of the crochet hooks are carved from bone.
- The pack of Boye crewel needles is 15cents (for 18 needles), the singer crewel needles in a 16 pack are originally 85 cents, marked down to 69 cents.
- metal embroidery hoops! Yay!
When life gives you lemons…
When Handsome Husband and I bought this tree three years ago, the good folks at the nursery had lost the tag. They knew it was a citrus, they weren’t sure just which citrus. They offered us the experience of a mystery adventure for 35% off. We went for it.
This is our first harvest. I have no idea what we will do with all of these lemons. I am open to suggestions.
Please notice the tomatoes in the background. Those plants came free with a dresser purchased through Craigslist. The couple was leaving town the next day and planning on throwing the plants out.
Please submit your ideas for what can be done with all of these lemons. Best idea wins a zesty prize!
FREE EMBROIDERY LESSONS

I drew up this pattern tonight and created a few basic “kits.”

More W.I.P.s
I am trying very hard to back down on excessive Christmas giving. It seems there is so much giving as a means to consume: buy, buy, buy. Here at Rubistudios, it’s more like make, make, make. In my large family, we pick names from a hat, instead of buying gifts for 5 siblings and their partners and children, we have only a few. This enables me to consider each gift carefully. My niece sent me some drawings of hers. I turned one into an embroidered pillow (above).
My mother never reads my blog, so I feel safe posting pics of her gift. So safe in fact I can say that I am leaving first thing in the morning to fly to CT for Thanksgiving to surprise her. This is silk ribbon on linen for her bag.
I extracted the motif from some of the bag fabric, a vintage marimekko panttern. Mom is into Vera Bradley bags, I am not; so I tried to meet in the middle. I call this bag “Suck it,Vera!”
This is a “W” in silk ribbon on silk. I cut the fabric from a curtain panel, pearl and charcoal gray dupioni silk West Elm, over two yards, brand new in the package for $2.99 at Goodwill.
NEW W(s)IP
Not ready for any finished photos, but here are some teasers from some Works-In-progress.
working on the icons of social networking
This one is kicking my ass right now, I am trying desperately to bring it to a place where I can photograph it for a show, the entry deadline is Monday and they don’t accept electronic submissions.
I really love this one, but it has taken a back burner to the other two. I can’t wait to bring it to a greater state of completion.
