Art is a solo show featuring the MFA work of Rubi McGrory. Executed
almost entirely in tiny stitches, Art
occurs where contemporary branding
and consumer semiotics intersect with the traditions of hand embroidery.

We are inundated with advertising not just through traditional media,
but within our personal space as well. Almost every object and product we
buy is emblazoned with logos and slogans.  In time, we become inured to
logos as agents of consumerism.

By re-creating contemporary consumer symbols through traditional
techniques of hand embroidery, McGrory asks the viewer to reconsider their
relationship with logos. The proliferation and repetition of manual
stitches belies the mass-production and lack of human authorship attributed
to these symbols.

Rubi McGrory, a Savannah resident, spent 16 years as a chef on private
yachts before attending Savannah College of Art & Design for graduate
school.
