Norm Carlson and hi-tech sign
After 49 years, 2 months and 11 days, the Voyager 1 space craft will be precisely one light day from the earth. That’s the distance a particle of light can travel in 24 hours, equaling about 16 billion miles (about 26 billion kilometers), a point that Voyager 1 will reach on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, at 2:16:07 a.m. PST.
Of course this deserves a bean party!
Especially since NASA celebrates successful launches with beans. In the 1900's NASA ground crew would bring prepared dishes to share with their coworkers on long, busy launch days. Test director Norm Carlson brought in a pot of beans and a pan of corn bread for the 1981 launch of STS-1, the first orbital flight of the space shuttle program. They were so popular, he doubled the batch for the next launch. Then tripled. Then he brought in 18 quart crock pots and cooked the beans one floor above the control room. The rallying cry “The Beans Are a Go,” signalled the completion of a successful launch and time to feast.
So, we’re going to get our nerd on and bean out with our friends and community. Seriously, if you’ve got NASA gear or space pants, it’s time to bust them out!
If you’re new to our bean club party, here’s how it works: we really want to spend time with our people in the most legumable way possible. I’m some combo of lazy and/or don’t want to spend all of my time trying not to burn my beans, so I make the beans and all y’all bring whatever accompaniments you feel like. But if you can’t bring anything, you should still come, that’s the whole point of community. We got you.
While Norm’s beans have ham, our bean party is vegetarian (eggs and dairy are ok).
